Curriculum
A broad and personalised curriculum designed to rebuild engagement, secure core skills and prepare pupils for recognised qualifications and adulthood.
Curriculum intent
Our curriculum gives pupils access to academic, technological, personal, social, physical, creative and vocational learning. It is planned around age, aptitude, SEND and prior attainment, while retaining ambitious next steps.
Core learning
Provision includes English, mathematics, science, ICT / digital skills, PSHRE and personal development. Depending on pathway and individual plan, pupils can also access art, music, sport, cooking, construction, hair and beauty, occupational studies and other vocational learning.
Qualifications
Qualification routes are available up to Level 2 across all subjects taught at SMS, matched to each pupil's starting point, age, individual plan and intended destination. Routes can include Functional Skills, GCSEs where appropriate, and vocational or creative qualifications.
Assessment and progress
Staff use starting-point information, ongoing assessment and review of individual plans to decide what pupils need to learn next. Assessment is intended to identify what pupils know, remember and can apply, not simply whether work has been completed.
Careers and preparation for adulthood
Careers learning, independent advice, college links and practical life-skills work help pupils prepare for post-16 education, training, employment and greater independence.
