SEND and inclusion

We tailor learning and support around each pupil’s strengths, needs and EHC plan, helping them access school and make meaningful progress.

Educational and welfare provision

SMS is a specialist setting. Pupils’ education and welfare provision is coordinated through individual planning, small-group or bespoke teaching, reasonable adjustments, pastoral support and access to specialist advice where required.

Teachers and support staff are expected to know the pupil’s agreed strategies and use them consistently in day-to-day learning. Progress and provision are reviewed so that support promotes access and independence rather than unnecessary dependence.

EHC plans

The school works with parents, carers, local authorities and relevant professionals to contribute to statutory EHC plan reviews and to provide the information reasonably required for those reviews.

English as an additional language

Where a pupil has English as an additional language, the school assesses the pupil’s language and learning needs and makes appropriate adaptations so that the pupil can access teaching, communication, safeguarding information and wider school life.

Specialist support

Depending on assessed need, pupils may access speech and language, occupational therapy, educational psychology or therapeutic input, including external specialist partners.
